If you want to learn the basics of betting on soccer then read on to get the lowdown on wagering on the biggest sport in the world with Pinnacle

How To Bet On Soccer

Two sides comprising of 11 players take to the field to battle over the course of a 90 minute game that has two 45 minute halves plus time added on for stoppages. Some matches also have extra time which comprise of two 15-minute periods with penalties then following to decide a winner if the scores are still locked together.

With the aim of the game to score a goal by putting the ball into the opposing team's net, it is no wonder why soccer has such a global appeal, with a premise everyone can get on board with.

However, while winning the game is a big part of betting on soccer, it is not the only market you can wager on.

Match Winner (1X2)

This is the most popular soccer betting market as it is so easy to understand and bet on. If Real Madrid play Barcelona in La Liga, there will be three outcomes you can bet on in this market. You can back Real Madrid to win, Barcelona to win, or a draw.

Handicap Betting

Handicap betting will see you placing a positive or negative handicap on a side. For example, if high-flying Manchester City face struggling Burnley, then the odds of City winning will be very short, while Burnley winning will offer longer odds, but the chance of your bet coming in will be slim.

You can therefore apply a handicap. By backing Manchester City to win with a -1.75 handicap, you will improve the odds you are betting with. However, City must win by two goals or more to cover the handicap. Therefore, if City win 2-1 then your bet will lose as City have not covered the handicap. This also works in the opposite way with a positive handicap providing the supposed weaker team with a headstart on the scoreline.

Totals

This betting market sees you wagering on how many total goals will be in the game. You can either bet on over/under or total goals exact. Over/under will give you a total number of goals, such as 2.5, and you simply bet on whether more or less than 2.5 goals will be scored.

Total goals exact will see you wagering on the specific number of goals you think will be scored in the game. This will usually offer better odds than over/under as it can be more difficult to nail the exact number of goals in a match.

Alternate Markets

The beauty of betting on soccer is that there are so many markets to wager on. You will find an array of pre-game (bets that are made before the match has begun) and in-play (bets made during the game) markets to enjoy.

Once you have gotten to grips with the basics of betting on soccer, you can transfer these skills into a number of other markets. For example, you can bet on first/last/anytime goal scorers, to score a hat trick, total cards, corners, both teams to score and much more.

Alongside single match bets, you can also bet on outright bets such as to win a certain competition, the top goal scorer, name the finalists, to be relegated and more.

You can also utilise different promotions that are available on site to swell your playing pot. There will be a glut of promotions on site that you can use for soccer and a number of other sports too. One very popular promotion currently running for basketball is the Silver Stakes $25,000 Bet Promotion. Keep an eye out for the promotions that you can use for soccer and other sports.

Creating A Betting Strategy

Knowing the form of a team, injuries to key players, home and away form and historic result in a competition are important, but sport by it's very nature if unpredictable.

Delving into complex predictive models may be beyond most average bettors, but doing basic data analysis can help to boost your results when betting on soccer. You can fairly easily quantify whether the claim 'they can't seem to win on the road' by analysing the supposed disadvantage on the road and using this to calculate odds to compare to those created by the bookies.

With soccer tough to predict and entirely random, looking at historical performances and past stats can provide you with an edge. Whatever the market you are looking to bet on, using data wisely can help to give you an advantage when you come to betting.

It is prudent to have a working knowledge of maths to ensure that you have the best possible chance of nailing winning bets. Using maths properly can tell you when you should bet or, more importantly, when you shouldn't bet. It can also help you to work out how much to stake, with the use of staking methods helping to ensure you are not betting too little or too much.

While there is so much to learn when it comes to betting on soccer, we have provided you with a way of getting a basic grasp of wagering on the beautiful game. Whether you are new to betting or an experienced bettor, there are always strategies, methods and elements of wagering that you can learn to help swell your knowledge of betting on soccer and beyond.
