Max Vestappen triumphed again at the Dutch Grand Prix. Can anyone stop Mad Max in 2022? Will Daniel Ricciardo repeat his 2021 Monza victory? Can Lewis Hamilton claim a sixth Italian Grand Prix? We return to Italy for the 16th round of the Formula One World Championship.

It’s the final part of the trilogy – after the summer break, we’ve been to Belgium, the Netherlands and now Italy. A historic triple header that for its final act takes us to the home of Ferrari, the Tifosi heartland of Monza.

Last time in Monza it was a McLaren 1-2 with Daniel Ricciardo taking his first win for the team. Who will win this time out? That’s the question. The simple answer is Max Verstappen but here’s why.

F1 2022: What happened at the Dutch GP?

Last time out Max was king of his very own castle as he came back from an interrupted Friday to top the timing sheets on Saturday and then take the win from the Mercedes of George Russell in 2nd and Charles Leclerc in 3rd.

It was a thrilling race which Max was likely to win in any event, but safety cars meant there was a window of opportunity for others – however, it slammed firmly shut and once again Max picked up maximum points to take his lead to a gigantic 109 points over the second-placed Charles Leclerc.

F1 2022 Italian GP: Red Bull v Ferrari

As we enter the Ferrari fortress it seems unlikely that they can really challenge Red Bull. Monza is the fastest track on the F1 calendar, and with Red Bull’s straight-line speed advantage, it is incredibly hard to see anyone but Max Verstappen taking the win.

Ferrari will try and fight back. But with their challenge faltering each weekend and development starting to turn to their championship fight next season, it seems that no matter how much the team will dream and how much the fans will pray, a win could be a stretch too far.

However, getting onto the podium is more likely for the scarlet team than any other. They will be aiming to collect a double and give the fans something to cheer about.

F1 2022 Italian GP: Who will win?

Six drivers on the grid have a win to their name at Monza in F1 – Ricciardo, most recently in 2021, along with Lewis Hamilton (5 wins), Sebastian Vettel (3), Fernando Alonso (2), Charles Leclerc (1) and Pierre Gasly (1).

In its 71-race history, there have been 39 different winners at the circuit, which also boasts the smallest winning margin in any F1 race ever – in 1971 Peter Gethin won by 0.01 seconds from Ronnie Peterson. There have been 41 occasions when the race has been won by less than 10 seconds.

Can Red Bull go 1-2 at Monza?

Last season it was a memorable 1-2 for McLaren with the images of Daniel Ricciardo on the top step of the podium doing a shoey, still emblazoned on many people’s minds. There have been 18 1-2’s for teams at Monza in F1 and this weekend could be the 19th with Red Bull seemingly having such a significant speed advantage at this circuit.

F1 2022 Italian GP: Who will be on pole?

Lewis Hamilton has the most poles at Monza with seven. However, 30 of the 71 pole sitters have failed to finish the race – is this an omen? 37 of those pole sitters have gone on to take a podium which leaves just four men who have started from pole and finished the race without finishing on the podium.

What if it rains?

Just four races have been rain-affected in the history of the GP – this year there is no rain expected on race day, although there is stormy weather predicted ahead of the weekend.

Can Mad Max nail The Grand Slam?

With pole, every lap lead, fastest lap and the race win making up the mighty Grand Slam there is a good chance Max Verstappen can do it this weekend. Max has done it twice in his career – the first time in Austria last year and again this season in Imola.

With the temple of speed rewarding the fastest car and driver combination, there seems like a good chance that Max will do it again. Lewis Hamilton is the current driver with the most Grand Slams with six, but he hasn’t added to that list since Abu Dhabi in 2021.

Who else to look out for?

There is no doubt that in recent years there have been a few surprise winners at the track, so who COULD throw a spanner in the Red Bull works this weekend? There are those six drivers on the grid who have previously won at Monza.

The Alpine’s go well in a straight line and if they qualify well either Esteban Ocon or Fernando Alonso could find themselves challenging. Ocon won in Hungary last year, but Alonso is still waiting for a win with Alpine – it’s a really long shot but it might be fun to watch.
