Baltimore Orioles at Houston Astros

With the loss of form of the New York Yankees over the last month, the Houston Astros have replaced them as the team with the best record in the American League.

Houston have a record of 78-45 at the time of writing, putting significant distance between themselves and the Seattle Mariners in the race for the AL West title.

On Saturday, they take on the Baltimore Orioles, a team who find themselves in a decent position in the closely contested AL East race with a record of 63-58. All four teams behind the New York Yankees in that division still have a chance of making the wild card spots so it is all to play for.

For the Orioles, their standout statistical performance has been in the area of stolen bases, where they have two of the top three players in the MLB – Jorge Mateo with 27 and Cedric Mullins with 25.

The Astros, in contrast, have standout performers across their line-up, with the pitching efforts of Justin Verlander being the most notable.

The 39-year-old has a 1.95 ERA (earned runs average) and a win-loss record of 15-3, with both of those marks leading the majors. His WHIP (walks and hits per inning pitched) of 0.88 also ranks third amongst starting pitchers.

This game is arguably of more importance to the Orioles, who, in such a competitive division, need to continue their good recent record to hold any chance of reaching the postseason with their young squad.

Atlanta Braves at St. Louis Cardinals

The Atlanta Braves and the St. Louis Cardinals have been two of the four best teams in the National League this year but face different prospects to reach the postseason as they take on each other on Saturday.

The Braves have the better record of the two (75-48 at the time of writing) but are chasing the runaway New York Mets at the top of the NL West.

On the other hand, the Cardinals’ 69-51 record at the time of writing is good enough for a five-game cushion at the top of the NL Central.

The Cardinals’ standout hitter has been Paul Goldschmidt, who has an outside chance at being just the second player since 1967 to win the Triple Crown by aiming for the best batting average and the most home runs and RBIs (runs batted in).

Goldschmidt leads the MLB in batting average at .340, ranks third in home runs with 31, and also third in RBIs with 100.

For the Braves, who are the defending World Series champions, their performance has been more of a team project. They rank third in runs scored with 600 and also sixth in ERA (3.58). A large part of that has been starter Max Fried, who sports an ERA of 2.60.

These two leading lights of the National League will be looking to improve their postseason prospects with a victory over another of the league’s strongest teams.

Los Angeles Angels at Toronto Blue Jays

With the New York Yankees stumbling at the head of the AL East, the Toronto Blue Jays have an opportunity to peg back the runaway leaders in the MLB’s most competitive division.

Toronto are 65-55 at the time of writing and are level with the Tampa Bay Rays in the two American League wild card spots.

They face the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday looking to put further pressure on the Yankees.

Big hitter Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has been a major part of their success, ranking in the top 15 in the league for home runs (26) and RBIs (75).

For the Angels, who face another season of AL West obscurity as they sport a 52-69 record, they must decide what direction they want their franchise to travel in, with Shohei Ohtani rumoured to want out at the end of his contract.

The 28-year-old two-way player has an ERA of 2.83 but has also hit 27 home runs, coupled with a .265 batting average.

The Angels may be out of contention for the playoffs this year but the Blue Jays are right in the conversation and will be hoping to advance their case with a win here.
